There’s a scene in the movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, where Town & Country magazine reporter, John Kelso—from New York—is preparing to go to bed. He’s in Savannah and it’s a little too quiet for him. He pulls a cassette player out of his luggage and plays a tape—it’s a busy, big-city soundscape with traffic, honks, and cab hails.
I related instantly. I find big-city sounds comforting and apparently I’m not alone.
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has produced a new album, Missing Sounds of New York.
“Missing Sounds of New York, a partnership with creative agency Mother New York, is a love letter to NYC, connecting New Yorkers around the familiar sounds of urban life that they love and miss during this unprecedented time of social separation,” is how NYPL describes the project.
