A new musical is coming to off-Broadway during PRIDE Month: With a title like this, it’s bound to be fun.

Camp Morning Wood is billed as Rocky Horror meets Naked Boys Singing.

Directed by Marc Eardley and choreographed by Ian Coulter-Buford and Jay Falzone, Camp Morning Wood is called a fresh, new musical comedy about a gay couple who decide to escape the Manhattan for a weekend camping in the woods. They plan to reconnect and unplug—but they get caught up in an adventure they never expected. A weekend of temptations and freeing (read naked) encounters leads the guys to new discoveries about themselves and each other that just might lead them back together.

What first caught my eye about this new show was the title of course, but the show’s clever marketing cinched the deal. The key art is Rocky & Bullwinkle cute—in its own way, of course.

The production’s Facebook page is chock full of clever. They’ve created profile graphics for each of the characters, and they’re a joy.

The cast’s rehearsal photos are pretty darn cute, too. Starring ALEX GAGNÉ, TIM GARNHAM, BRADY VIGNESS, the cast features Nick Cartusciello, Anthony Logan Cole, Courtney Dease, Najee Gabay-Knight, Ethan Gwynn, Jeffrey Johns, Sean Stephens, Bryan Songy, and Michael Witkes.

Jacob and I are headed to Manhattan this month to spend a few days celebrating PRIDE on the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. (I wrote about my personal memories of that point in time in an earlier post.) Tickets for Camp Morning Wood, in hand we’re looking forward to a fun time off-Broadway.

Co-creator, Will Shishmanian says, “We created this show to celebrate a message of unconditional love and to remind us all that when we put down our phones and defy digital app culture… we’re reconnecting to each other in very human, analog ways.”

You can look for Jacob and me in the front row. Seriously.

Rowe Price was more twisted than Fidelity’s green line. With scholarship in hand, I left Kansas at 18 to study theatre in New York. When my soap opera paychecks stopped coming from CBS and started coming from the show’s sponsor, Proctor & Gamble, I discovered the power of advertising and switched careers. Over the years I’ve owned an ad agency in San Francisco; worked for Norman Lear on All in the Family, Good Times, Sanford and Son, and the rest of his hit shows; and as a member of Directors Guild of America, I directed Desi Arnaz in his last television appearance— we remained friends until his death. In 1988 I began freelancing full time didn’t look back. In January 2012 my rep at Boss Group called and said, “I know you don’t want to commute and writing for the financial industry isn’t high on your wish list, but I have a gig with T. Rowe Price in Owings Mills…” I was a contractor for eight months, drank the corporate Kool-Aid, became a TRP associate that August, and today I find myself smiling more often than not.
