Doug Gansler didn’t win the primary race for governor in Maryland, but he won thousands and thousands of supporters with messages like this 4th of July email that I just received:

Whether it is fighting to ensure that women have the same choices and control over their healthcare as men do, that all adults can love and marry equally, or that every child in Maryland has access to a top-notch education, the job of Attorney General provides an opportunity every day to push us closer to the truth behind the words set forth in the Declaration of Independence:

“… that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness … “

So today, while we celebrate all the work we as a nation have done to bring a greater truth to “all Men are created equal,” let’s also renew our commitment to bring us closer to the realization of this truth.

Let’s commit to pushing back against the Hobby Lobby decision. Let’s commit to ensuring equal pay for equal work here in Maryland. Let’s fight for marriage equality in every state. Let’s work to fulfill the promise of the American dream for all Maryland children by providing them with a quality education no matter what their zip code.

p.s. And let’s remember to thank all the women and men who put their lives on the line to protect our nation’s Declaration of Independence and our commitment to the ideals set forth therein.

We thank you for your work, your diligence, your compassion, your understanding, and most of all for helping to lead Maryland to the newer, smarter, more vibrant, more accepting state that we all deserve and one that we can all continue to be proud of.
